The King of Prime Rib
Here in Beverly Hills, connoisseurs of fine meat know that the only place worth decking out for prime rib is Lawry's The Prime Rib on La Cienega's restaurant row. Lawry's The Prime Rib has been around for almost 70 years and continues to please time after time. They are not just a household name in seasonings, spices, marinades, and dressings, but they are also a stellar restaurant known as the "king" of prime rib.
The founders Lawrence L. Frank and Walter Van de Kamp focused on building a restaurant that took great care in how dinner was prepared and presented. Lawrence designed the famous "silver" carts to display the sizzling beef and present tableside carving and this family business keeps that tradition alive to this day. Walter Eckstein, the Executive Chef in Beverly Hills, keeps diners delighted with Lawry's sizzling prime rib and more.
Besides the fabulous food, diners return again and again after their first experience because of Lawry's excellent tableside service and artful presentation of their signature items. Glancing around, you can't miss their signature silver carts floating around the dining area serving made to order delicious prime rib and signature sides. The country club atmosphere, with dark wood, glass panes, red booths, large green palms in extravagant vases, and large murals of English countryside life is absolutely charming.
At Lawry's, you get treated like royalty as your table is pulled out in front of you, allowing you to slip into the soft, plush booth. I recommend starting the evening off with a Lawry's Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, which comes with deliciously succulent and fresh jumbo shrimp that is simple, yet satisfying. For drinks, get a classic Dirty Martini or Manhattan from the bar or choose from their great selection of wines. The waitresses are always more than happy to help and if in doubt, Lawry's own label of Cabernet Sauvignon is soft and medium-bodied and compliments well with the prime rib.
Lawry's well-established restaurant offers a great value for the quality and portion of their entrees. Unlike many steak restaurants which serve steak without complementary sides, Lawry's pampers their diners with their signature items that come with every entrée. Included are their Famous Original Spinning Bowl Salad, Yorkshire Pudding, mashed potatoes, and whipped cream or plain horseradish.
The waitresses are dressed in classic brown and white dresses with matching hats and waist aprons to match the country club, colonial life atmosphere.
Our waitress arrived with a large silver salad bowl atop a cradle of ice to create the Famous Original Spinning Bowl Salad and we watched dazzled, as she tipped the fluid dressing like a magician and spun the bowl effortlessly over the ice. The chilled salad forks were an elegant touch accompanying the generous serving of salad. While the salad show is worth the watch, the confirmation comes with each bite. A chilled, crisp salad with shredded beets, spinach, romaine lettuce, mixed greens, chopped egg, and croutons thoroughly mixed with their special vintage dressing is the perfect teaser before the main entree.
Lawry's menu is simple and offers chicken, seafood, and of course, prime rib. The best thing about Lawry's is that your prime rib is literally made to order! There is no waiting for your order to arrive because the professional carver simply steers the silver bullet over to your tableside for serving. Is this royal service or what? The carver can serve your piece well done, medium rare, or rare, with your choice of creamed or plain horseradish. Most importantly the secret behind its aromatic flavor and unique taste is their delectable Au Jus sauce, which saturates the prime rib and allows its rich flavor to seep within.
Lawry's offers different sizes and varieties of cuts for everyone. For those with lighter appetites desiring a leaner cut, the California Cut is a great choice, or if you prefer, the English Cut, is three thin slices of the same. The traditional Lawry Cut is a generous serving, while the "Diamond Jim Brady" Cut is an extra thick portion for those with bigger appetites. Last but not least, Lawry's offers The Beef Bowl Cut for the largest of appetites. If you are oscillating between steak and seafood, the perfect choice would be the Lobster and Prime Rib combination, which consists of two freshly steamed lobster tails with your choice of cut. Lawry's offers a cut and combination that will accommodate everyone and anyone.
In addition to the tender, juicy, flavorful prime rib, diners can choose from Lawry's delicious signature sides. A large Idaho baked potato topped with all the trimmings you could desire or a serving of creamed corn, skillet mushrooms, fresh asparagus, or buttered peas. My personal favorite is their world famous creamed spinach because it is subtly seasoned with light cream and enhanced with chopped bacon.
Whether it is a weeknight or weekend, Lawry's always has a wait and is constantly bustling with diners because they know how to make a memorable dining experience.
