South Street

A Big Philly Cheese Steak Hunk of Burning Love!

If you want authentic Philly cheese steaks, chicken wings, and more, without having to travel cross-country in order to enjoy them, you are in luck, thanks to Mitchell "Mitch" Goldman and Robert "Smitty" Smith, the founders of South Street.  South Street is a neighborhood eatery serving "Philly cheese steaks made with brotherly love".  With their UCLA Westwood location thriving since 2001, they have thus received top ratings in the Zagat Survey, Los Angeles Times, and LA Weekly, and have just opened a second location in Burbank, California.

South Street's interior is decorated with a true "Philly" feel, with their fire engine red chairs atop the black and white-checkered floor, against the brick walls with "unfinished" plaster, giving it an Eastside neighborhood atmosphere.  Even the tables come covered with a newspaper print montage featuring sporting or historical events relating to the City of Brotherly Love.  Museum worthy memorabilia like bleachers from a Philadelphia stadium or baseballs from a game are displayed throughout the eatery.   The large flat screen television in the center of the dining area is almost always on a sports channel, surrounded by a crowd of local Bruins.  You can guarantee the place gets packed when there's a big game on (especially if its a Philly team)!  It's the perfect spot for gathering a group together and eating good food in a fun, upbeat surrounding.

South Street offers four tempting choices of steak which can be ordered as a regular 6" or large 12"; Philly Cheese Steak, Philly Steak, Philly Pizza Steak, and the Philly Mushroom Cheese Steak.  I can easily devour a large 12" because it is just that good!  The most popular is the Philly Mushroom Cheese Steak, served on a warm and soft Amarosa Italian roll (shipped in daily from hometown Philly), the succulent thin carved pieces of high quality tender rib eye drips of juice that blends with melted white American and provolone cheese.  The sharp flavor of the cheese and its creamy texture combined with sautéed mushrooms, onions, and rich steak is sinfully delicious.   South Street packs on generous portions of steak with sautéed aromatic onions and meaty mushrooms.   Your senses are in heaven as you sink your teeth into this.

Just as good are the South Street Philly Chicken Steak Sandwiches and Veggie Sandwiches.  Also made with Amarosa's famous Italian rolls, the Philly Chicken Cheese Steak is a bundle of moist white chicken breast, thinly sliced and melted with cheese for that "Philly steak" taste, minus the red meat.  You can even add fun and delicious extras like Cheez whiz, sweet peppers, or pizza sauce!  Vegetarians are also in luck because South Street offers all the flavor and feel of a cheese steak with their carefully seasoned, grilled and roasted vegetables.  The Hot Philly Vegetarian Sandwich, with its bed of grilled eggplant, red peppers, sautéed greens, and a topping of spicy pizza sauce, will please any herbivore!

In addition to South Street's fabulous menu of steak sandwiches, they make a pretty mean hoagie sandwich as well!  Sure, L.A. has numerous hoagie sandwich stands, but do any of them guarantee fresh and superior ingredients to capture that home-style taste?  Since South Streets' hoagies are made with the same quality Amarosa rolls used for the Philly cheese steaks, the bread is crisped on the outside and strong enough to withhold all the fillings without getting soggy.  South Street uses only the finest imported and domestic meats and cheeses as well as the freshest lettuce, tomatoes, and onions for all their hoagie sandwiches.  The ever-popular South Street Hoagie is robustly filled with thin, savory slices of gourmet mortadella, salami, capicolla, and provolone, and topped with roasted peppers.  Choose from a variety of vegetarian options to tuna, turkey, or cold rib eye steak.

South Street's menu also features specials like pastrami, pork, or Italian sausage sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, low-carb wraps, salads, and more.  A local favorite are the Eagles' Wings, which are fried chicken wings with golden crispy skin and a good blend of spiciness.  Not like typical chicken wings which are saturated with hot sauce, dried out and completely overcooked, these wings are battered and fried to a copper crisp, while the meat inside stays juicy, flavorful, and piping hot!  And if you are a fellow spicy hot chili pepper lover, then you will definitely dig South Street's fabulous condiment assortment of various peppers, jalapenos, and hot sauces.

Their signature fresh cut Philly fries, double-baked, crispy and long, and full of zest is a must try.  You can even get goodies like famous Tastykakes assorted baked goods, authentic Philly Pretzels, Hank's sodas and Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, imported straight from the heart of Philadelphia.  For dessert, get an Italian Water Ice in cherry, lemon, chocolate or special monthly flavors.  Italian water ice is a frozen dessert of fruit juices or chocolate mixed with ice, resulting in a very smooth and delightful treat.

For most of us, Los Angeles is a heck of a lot closer than Philadelphia - So visit today and roll on over to either their Westwood or Burbank location in Los Angeles for a great meal.  Open Monday through Sunday; 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., Take out & delivery available.
