Set Editions

Smart and Modern Cards for Everyday and More

Set Editions Set Editions offers an unpretentious array of letterpressed cards, foil stamped postcards, and more. Offering intelligent designs for those looking to send a card any old time, Set Editions is easy on the wallet and friendly to the environment with its reasonable prices and use of recycled and post-consumer papers. Alison Riley, founder of Set Editions, launched her business in 2004. Ironically, her business began by accident when she began printing her infamous Stop Talking cards, born of an honest desire for more quietness. They were so popular at work they disappeared by the stack, and Alison soon took the next step in boxing and selling them, while also coming up with Cardstock, a practical, handy box of all the cards needed in a year.

Set EditionsWhile Alison studied writing rather than art in college, her love of words ties everything together. She is obviously gifted with the talent of communicating through different mediums as she was previously the Design Director for Barneys New York. Alison has always pursued her creativity through various forms of communication, from reading and writing to designing. “I don't consider myself a creator so much as an organizer. My imagination is best expressed in text, but the presentation or medium changes,” says Alison. Set Editions is unique from other stationers because their concept is clean, creative, and succinct. They step away from the fancy or cutesy designs of flowers and animals to instead “aim for a spare aesthetic with some interesting content.”

Among her bestsellers, the “Stop Talking” cards, with the phrase printed in black caps against a striking white background, speaks loudly. With the election around the corner, the “Vote” cards are absolutely genius! Like the “Stop Talking” cards, these business sized cards with “vote” in red writing are smart and fun. These miniature cards are a great conversation starter with new friends or just enjoyable to hand out as a note to old ones. Both cards are just $8 for a slim put in your purse box of 25. Set Editions Set Editions is also proud to feature Cardstock, which is quite popular and highly recommend because it is something that everyone could use. This handy box filled with cards for birthdays, thank you, anniversaries, holidays, and more is a must! No extra trips to the stationary store and no more belated excuses. $60 for a box of 40 cards/42 envelopes.

Set EditionsI absolutely adore Set Editions letterpress cards as the designs are so breathtakingly fresh and clever with its pure white background. The cards are good quality with a durable thickness and are amazingly only $16 for a set of 8 cards/envelopes! The Morse Code card simply displays a phonetic and numerical chart of the Morse code, but stands apart because it is so different than any other cards I have seen. It almost inspires me to learn and tap out the code for myself! For those on the more nerdy and intellectual side, the Latin Phrases card, listing classic phrases Set Editionslike “Tabula Rasa” and “Vox Populi” are sure to please. Another is the Phonetic Alphabet card, which vertically lists the alphabet from Alpha to Zulu. One of my other favorites is the Guitars letterpress cards, featuring 4 different outline designs of electrical guitars against a clean white backdrop. The Knots cards are also a fun choice because they show different kinds of knots like the bowline knot and lariat loop. The Seven Wonders of the Natural World cards lists wonders like Mount Everest, Grand Canyon, Great Barrier Reef, and more. Other letterpress card designs include the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Set EditionsBeginning in May, Set Editions will launch their chipboard postcards, varying from fun to classic ideas and words. The Heart postcard has a large bubble gum pink heart in the center of the chipboard card. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this postcard can likely say it all. The Days postcards features a Set Editionsdifferent day of the week in lowercase font on each postcard, while the Months postcards feature each month in capital fonts. Classic postcards like the Happy New Year, with metallic gold foil stamped in a lovely cursive or the Happy Birthday, in blue capital font are ones that everyone can use and enjoy. An artsy choice is the Pinecone postcard, featuring a large metallic silver foil stamped pinecone. Set EditionsThe Good Luck postcard is a fun one, with bright yellow letters displaying the message. $12 for a set of 7 or 8 cards. Last but not least, her foil stamped gift tags are also made of chipboard with the words “for you” in either a lively red in all caps or an elegant black cursive. These are unadorned and easy to match and throw onto gift bags or wrapped presents. $10 for 8 tags.

We love that her line is green as everything is essentially made from recycled and post-consumer papers. Set Editions is extremely affordable compared to most other stationers. Alison says, “I am always surprised at how expensive other cards can be. In the end, I hope the cards are smart rather than just decorative.” Some of Alison’s favorites include the Stop Talking cards, Letterpress Guitar cards, and Days chipboard postcards. Stop Talking is obviously close to her heart because it was her first product. Alison gets ideas for her designs in various ways, through suggestions from friends or seeing something that catches her eye. She realizes that not all cards have to call for celebration or an occasion, as her "I know in my heart that you lied" cards are one of the bestsellers.

Alison is extremely passionate about Set Editions and is happy that she has found her niche among booksellers, design shops, and traditional stationery stores. Her future hopes are that Set Editions will continue to grow in that way, and that her cards will bring people a little joy through words and pictures. Set Editions is sold in various stores nationwide, including the Shop at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, Book Soup in Los Angeles, Greenwich Letterpress New York, and Rock Paper Scissors in Virginia. Orders can also be placed online at seteditions.com.
