Not Your Everyday Diamond: Jewelry Blended with Bohemian and Luxe
Katie Diamond may seem like a novice with her youthful face, gorgeous smile and lively eyes, but there is no doubt that she masters the art of jewelry making with exceptional precision and talent. Her exquisite collection features pieces cast in 14 karat yellow, rose and white gold, accented with unique types and cuts of diamonds and colored stones. Her jewelry has a “worldly feel reminiscent of Morocco with the juxtaposition of old and new styles with eastern and western influences” to deliver her distinctive signature style. Katie Diamond Jewelry presents an intimate collection of necklaces, earrings, and rings that is a blend of bohemian and luxe. Hollywood’s leading ladies like Scarlett Johansson and Keri Russell are admirers of her collection and custom pieces. Katie Diamond Jewelry stands apart from other jewelry designs because every model is handmade and all jewelry is locally crafted in her studio from start to finish. Katie takes care to focus on small production runs and to personally work on every piece of jewelry that leaves the studio.
The Priya Suri Earrings are one of our personal favorites and also an Editor’s Pick. These charming sterling silver earrings feature Moroccan lantern silhouettes with teardrop white sapphires dangling in the center. The brushed silver of the lantern outlines against the translucent pear sapphires emanates a lustrous and pearly hue that dances with each move. The Moroccan lantern silhouettes are uniquely eye-catching from a distance and simply beautiful up close. These earrings are stunning enough to wear with a simple black dress or blouse to add just the right amount of sophistication and elegance.
Katie attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, but it was not until after graduation that she began studying and pursuing how to become a goldsmith under Cecilia Bauer. She had a jewelry collection from 2003 – 2005 before starting a family, but once her son, Nate, was born, she sold her share of the business in order to stay at home and focus on being a mother. During that time, her friends began asking her to design engagement rings and custom pieces for weddings, anniversaries, and special birthday gifts. Within a year, Katie had created enough pieces to inspire and launch a new collection. In 2007, with motherhood under control and an ambitious desire for creativity and a career, she launched Katie Diamond Jewelry. What started as a mere hobby creating custom engagement rings and special pieces eventually blossomed into a successful and distinctive jewelry collection.
One of our beloved necklace and earring sets that evoke a good dose of fun and feminine charm are the Buttercup Necklace and Buttercup Earrings in Sterling. While both pieces look great by themselves, they look amazing when worn together as a trio of buttercups. The Buttercup Necklace in Sterling has a tiny sterling silver buttercup flower pendant with a 14K gold center. The delicate buttercup pendant showcases five perfectly shaped petals which stand out with its gold pistil center. This adorable necklace is
perfect as an everyday piece because the small buttercup hangs delicately along the neckline and is unobtrusive enough to be worn with anything but cute enough to get noticed. The matching Buttercup Earrings in Sterling feature
the same buttercup flowers as studs to adorn the lobes. These earrings are great for those who prefer to wear studs because the unique and subtle design of the buttercup flower adds appeal and charisma without being flamboyant.
For a more modern but just as feminine look, the Brigitte Earrings are absolutely delightful and will compliment any outfit. These dainty earrings are made of three tiny sterling silver discs with 14K gold
center dots. This trio of petite discs is vertically interlocked atop one another to dangle freely with lots of movement. The design is simple and refreshing, while the minute details of the contrasting gold center dots against the silver adds depth and character. Her collections are strongly influenced by her travels to India, Spain, Morocco, Israel, Mexico, and France. Her design ideas can come from architecture, culture, and even antique textiles, which she collects. Katie carries a sketchbook as inspiration can come from anything and new styles are added to her collection twice a year.
Katie has always had a creative side because even as a young child, her favorite thing was to make clothes for her little sister out of paper bags. She has always been crafty with projects and loves working with her hands. As her husband’s family has been in the jewelry business for many years, she luckily has access to all sorts of resources and information about design, production, and the jewelry business. Katie says, “I have always been drawn to special jewelry and love the permanence of a good piece.” Katie is the sole creator and designer of her designs with a production team lead by the talented Shimon Hirsch as her success and business has grown. She especially enjoys working with 14k and 18k gold, and combining them with interesting diamond shapes such as diamond slices, rose cuts and irregular, free form stones. Most of the stones used in her collection are hand picked by her husband on his frequent trips to India and Hong Kong. She has also enjoyed working with more affordable materials like sterling silver and thread, to offer a more affordable collection.
Katie was kind enough to share some of her personal favorites from her collection. She adores the Suri Necklace because it is so classic yet unique. She originally created the necklace as a gift to her sisters and best friends for special birthdays. The necklace features a gold teardrop pendant with a sparkling white diamond slice in the center and encased with pave diamonds around. Another favorite are the Samira Earrings for their suzani inspired disks that are the perfect size for everyday earrings. She loves it for its
ethnic yet modern look, one of her favorite combinations. As for rings, she chose the Buttercup Cluster Ring because it makes such a statement as a feminine piece and looks like something that could have been passed down the generations by her grandmother. The ring showcases a delightful cluster of nine buttercup flowers with diamond centers.
Her collections are sold at Fred Segal in Los Angeles, Essenza in Seattle, and Katherine in Jackson Hole. The bigger news is that she is about to open a “Katie Diamond Jewelry” store in her hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey. As for the future, she has no concrete plans as she feels very lucky to be doing what she loves and hopes she can continue making jewelry that people enjoying wearing. Katie is happily married with two young boys, Nate, 4, and Sam, 2. She finds herself very blessed to have such a fulfilling and busy life between her family and career.
