Emi-Jay

A Pretty Palette of Chic Hair Ties and Headbands
Emi-Jay was founded and created by teen entrepreneurs, Emily Matson and Julianne Goldmark. Emi-Jay is unique from other hair accessory designers because their well-known hair ties and headbands are extremely versatile and appeal to a wide clientele at an affordable price. Their hair ties do not dent or crease like most hair ties, and their vibrant color and smooth elastic allows it to be worn as a bracelet. This aspect alone gives it a flair that many hair ties simply do not have. Emi-Jay has been featured in fashion magazines such as Lucky, Marie Claire, Oprah, InStyle, Allure, and more. Celebrity clients such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Kim Kardashian, Kristen Bell, Jennifer Garner, and Heidi Klum are big fans of Emi-Jay. All items are designed and produced in Los Angeles, California.
Before starting Emi-Jay, Julianne found herself always searching for headbands and other hair accessories similar to the fashionable ones worn on Gossip Girl. She came across some that were adorable but ridiculously expensive. Emily originally found herself inspired by the growing trend of hair accessories since she was constantly searching for cute and versatile accessories that were age-appropriate and affordable. This led Emily and Julianne to start making accessories with their own affordable, cute and creative designs, which eventually blossomed into Emi-Jay. They both attend The Buckley School, but Julianne is interested in attending Parsons, Fashion Institute of Technology, and UCLA Design School whereas Emily has her eyes on Columbia University, Boston University, and New York University.
Both Emily and Julianne agree that the Classic Hair Tie is their favorite. For bright and vivid colors, we like the Classic Summer Hair Ties as they will liven up any outfit when worn as a hair tie or bracelet. The packet comes with five colors of Vivid Violet, Splendid Pink, Tropical Turquoise, Chic Chartreuse, and Orange Fizz. Also available in a packet of eight with additional colors. For a more subtle look, you might want to select the Classic Collection, which comes
with three Black Satin, three Cocoa Brown and two Navy Satin. Julianne loves the neutral and grey tone ties because of its rich colors and versatility in going well with almost every color. Emily considers the classic hair tie “a fabulous beauty staple and also a cute accessory.” As for Editor’s Picks, we selected the Classic Metallic Hair Ties for their chic and glitzy hues of Vanilla Beige, Gold Medal, Snowflake Silver, Gunmetal Grey and Bronze. One packet of five metallic hair ties retails for under $11 and will be sure to become an everyday favorite for your hair or as a bracelet.
Julianne has always had a creative eye for all things related to design and took various art and design classes when she was younger. She has also taken photography classes both in and outside of school. Over the last few years, she has worked as a stylist for a charitable fashion show, sponsored by labels such as Juicy Couture, benefitting children in Africa. Emily has had a love and strong passion for fashion and art since she was young. When she was eleven, she attended a creative arts camp and learned to sew, sketch, make patterns, and also make garments out of unconventional items, including a trash bag gown. Emily has taken design and photograph courses at creative arts camp in addition to photography at school. Both Emily and Julianne love photography and continue to take photos as a hobby.
Emi-Jay is special because besides being versatile and affordable, they have a give-back factor to the community and various charities. Julianne says, “A portion of every Emi-Jay purchase is donated towards charities, which is not only a great way to help others, but
adds a unique component to our business!” The duo comes up with new colors of headbands and hair ties based on the “in” colors for the upcoming seasons. When Emi-Jay introduces limited edition pieces, such as the Satin Bow Hair Tie, they brainstorm off recent looks and ads they love. Emily loves the Satin Bow Hair Ties, which is a classic hair tie with a shredded silk bow attached. She adores it because it is a “chic rendition of our staple, and looks great worn alone as a bracelet too!” We selected the Grey Pearl Hair Tie with Grey Satin Bow as an Editor’s Pick, with its soft and stretchy material that has been hand-dyed and hand-knotted with a hand frayed silk satin bow. This hair tie adds a touch of sophistication and girly glam to your everyday outfit.
The Gunmetal Hair Tie with Silver Crystal Bead is another Editor’s Pick because the beautiful crystal pave bead makes the ponytail “evening-appropriate” as stated by O, The Oprah Magazine. The dark gunmetal of this hand-dyed and hand-knotted hair tie accented with a sparkling pave bulb is absolutely stunning while simple. Emi-Jay often introduces new color collections, in addition to their satin bow and crystal bead hair ties, while their classic hair ties are continually available year-round. Their headbands are also a staple, with changing colors to suit the season. Both Emily and Julianne come up with the color and design concepts while their staple hair ties and headbands never change. These items are often available in different colors, along with special edition products. Headbands are available in both regular (5/8") and wide (1”)
in an array of colors. We cannot stop raving about these headbands because unlike other fashionable headbands which can hurt after wearing or require constant readjusting, Emi-Jay headbands are comfortable enough to be worn all day long and stay securely. We selected the Wide Headbands as they are the perfect size for holding back your tresses while looking elegant and chic. We love the Black Satin, Chocolate Pearl, and Grey Pearl as these neutral and stylish colors go with just about everything. Made of the same soft and stretchy hand-dyed and hand-knotted material for the hair ties, these headbands are a must-have.
In the next five years, Julianne and Emily hope Emi-Jay will have expanded worldwide and possibly expand into clothing, jewelry, and other accessories. “I would love for us to continue making hair accessories while also adding other elements to the line,” Julianne says. Emi-Jay sells the most to the online boutique, Gilt.com, and the Cosmetic Market in Nashville. Emi-Jay is also sold worldwide in countries such as the United Kingdom, China, Canada, and Australia. Visit their website and online store to pick up some hair ties and headbands for yourself or as gifts while knowing that every purchase goes towards a good cause.
