BistroMD

Just What the Doctor Ordered: A Prescription of Gourmet Food for Weight Loss

BistroMDBistroMD launched nationally in October 2005 and is the only gourmet delivery food company that physically sees patients because they are owned and managed by a doctor.  Co-Founders of bistroMD, Ed and Caroline Cederquist, happily married for over 20 years, are known as the Foodie and the MD.  Dr. Caroline Cederquist says, “If you want nutritious and gourmet meals, but lack the time to shop, cook and clean—we are the closest thing out there because we are not just food in a box. We are a program that can change your life.”  BistroMD is unique and different from other gourmet delivery food companies because they provide a full scale diet program from people who have dedicated their lives to helping people lose weight.  Their team of dieticians and chefs led by Dr. Cederquist sees patients daily in her medical practice for weight loss.  They are real people making real gourmet food.

The inspiration to launch bistroMD came after Ed was sitting in the waiting room listening to Dr. Cederquist’s patients’ share their delight with her plan to treat their weight loss with better food and lifestyle choices.  However, they expressed their frustration with trying to cook for themselves because it was like another full time job just to eat healthy.  Not to mention, some people do not have the time or skills to properly execute such entrees – which is why the Cederquists went out to solve that problem.  Ed shares, “We have a very simple principle here at bistroMD—we would not create a meal that we would not eat ourselves.  In fact, we are proud to serve the same quality, natural food that we eat at our own dinner table.”

BistroMDThe saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” holds true because it is the fuel your body needs to sustain itself throughout the rest of the day.  BistroMD has amazing options such as Steak and Onion Omelet, English Muffin Breakfast Sandwich with Turkey Sausage, Chicken Fiesta Omelet and many more.  We especially enjoyed the Chicken Apple Sausage and 7 Grain Waffles with Peach Compote as the sausage provided a great source of protein without sacrificing flavor.  The seven grain waffles were soft and fluffy and tasted like regular waffles but with twice the nutritional benefits.  The peach compote was a natural fruity touch as it provided some sweetness to the waffles as a substitute for syrup.  The Ham and Swiss Omelet with Waldorf Apples is a classic oldie but goodie that was both tasty and healthy.  The trifecta BistroMDof breakfast goodness with ham, cheese and egg, this lean egg-white omelet is folded in half and stuffed with diced natural ham and rich Swiss cheese.  The cinnamon spiced apples topped with dried cranberries and walnuts alongside were just the right amount of sweetness to balance the savory omelet.  Among their endless options, the Berry Crepes are, by far, one of the most popular entrees, made with fresh ricotta and fresh, juicy berries.  They are perfect for a healthy and relaxing weekend brunch.

Being quite the foodie, Ed’s culinary background stems from his passion for food as he taught himself how to cook by trial and error.  His mother cooked wonderful, hearty Italian dishes, but they were generally full of butter, fat and salt.  When he left home, he wanted to figure out a way to cook healthy so he taught himself.  As for his personal bistroMD favorites, Ed loves the Chicken Mushroom Crepes for Breakfast and recommends the Jerk Chicken with Mango Salsa, a delicious and hearty take on lunch—with a little extra spice.   Also a fan favorite is the Salmon with Spinach and Wild Rice for lunch, which was originally a summer menu item that became part of the regular menu due to popularity.  For dinner, the Stuffed Chicken with Feta and Spinach is amazing.  And the Pork Tenderloin with Olive Tapenade is absolutely delicious and one of their most requested items. It is hearty, tangy, balanced and healthy, making it the ideal family dinner.  BistroMD also offers seasonal items as they create new meals seasonally, such as a delicious Beef and Ale Stew for winter.

BistroMDLunch has plenty of amazing and healthy entrees to offer.  From Turkey and Beef Chipotle Chili, Chicken Paprikash and Bombay Inspired Chicken to Bacon Cheeseburger Meatloaf, Provencal Salmon and Shrimp Curry, you will look forward to having lunch everyday.  The Steak House Wrap Kit was creative as it arrived with ground sirloin mixed with caramelized onions, green peppers, and cilantro pesto, topped with shredded cheddar and a whole wheat tortilla wrap on the side.  And if that was not enough, the creamed spinach was the icing on the cake.  The Pistachio Chicken features a delicious, grilled lean chicken breast that is coated with chopped pistachios and savory avocado sauce.  Its side of garlic green beans with decadent chive mashed BistroMDcauliflower takes vegetables to a whole new level.  The company decided on naming itself bistroMD after a very long discussion because they wanted it to be more than a diet delivery company while incorporating the idea of great tasting food with the science of weight loss.  Most people do not realize that there is indeed a science to losing weight, so combining bistro (representing food) with MD (science) was the magical touch.  Dr. Cederquist’s innovative diet program focuses on changing the body’s metabolism so that patients lose weight in a healthy manner and avoid gaining the weight back later.

BistroMDThe easy part is signing up online with mybistroMD, your own personal account allowing you to control ingredients and create your menu, along with advice from their experts, fitness and weight loss tips, health information and more.  After signing up, you can customize your weekly menus by selecting what ingredients you want to keep and remove.  Then a variety of entrees will populate based on your ingredient selections and you can then further add or remove entrees.  BistroMD also offers free one-on-one consultations with your personal Registered Dietician, where you can schedule weekly check-ins and get advice.  You can expect excellent customer service as integrity is at the heart of what they do and help is just a phone call away.  All fresh foods are made with the freshest ingredients available from responsible sources and prepared by real chefs within their USDA-inspected kitchen.  The entrees are delivered frozen to ensure freshness while also allowing customers to consume entrees at their own pace rather than rushing through meals to avoid spoilage.

BistroMDDinner was the most creative of meals as many of the entrees seemed to have a gourmet  touch with their ingredients and preparation method. We were quite impressed with the Chicken Breast Stuffed with Broccoli and Cheddar (another option is stuffed with spinach and feta).  The tender chicken breast was stuffed with a savory, creamy mixture of broccoli and cheese.  The dish comes with a roasted garlic veloute, butternut squash and a roasted barley salad.  Some notable entrees were Salmon BistroMDwith Pepper Coulis, Beef Bourguignon, Lasagna Rollatini, Roasted Norwegian Salmon and Chicken Tikka Masala.  Their take on the traditional French bourguignon is made by braising hand-cut chunks with pearl onions and button mushrooms but keeps it light in calories and carbs by serving it over cauliflower puree instead of with unhealthy baguettes and rolls.  The Blackened Salmon with Champagne Sauce was also well-prepared and delicious.  Incorporating elements worldwide, this blackened Norwegian fillet is accented with a sweet champagne sauce.  Paired with hearty Creole okra and tomato stew, this is a meal you will remember.

For the future in five years, Ed wants to see bistroMD be the thought leader of using food to manage different medical conditions.  After all, food is medicine and it is bistroMD’s number one goal to make a compelling difference in people’s lives.  BistroMD sells directly to consumers because they enjoy developing a relationship with clients and genuinely like hearing their stories and seeing their progress.  Their biggest challenge is for people to understand what bistroMD is doing and what they are about.  They want people to really associate that food is medicine and how phenomenal real food can taste while still losing weight.  According to the USDA, it takes 18 hours a week to shop for healthy food, cook and clean. The average consumer only has 5 hours a week to shop, cook and clean on their own.  There is obviously a big discrepancy and they want readers to know that bistroMD can be their solution.  BistroMD challenges you by saying, “If you don’t have time to cook, try us for a week and experience the great tasting real food that will make you feel better, give you more energy and lose weight.”
