Amrita Singh

Amrita Singh

Exotic Jewelry Shines with the Magical Touch of India
Amrita SinghAmrita Singh launched her famous jewelry line, Amrita Singh, in 2003 as it was always her dream to have her own business.  She even laid out the business in her mind when she was only thirteen years old.  While Singh was initially interested in creating a clothing line, she simply fell in love with jewelry and never looked back.  This “accidental love” grew into a unique and compelling “passion.”  Singh describes her style of jewelry as “Indian inspired in design made for the modern lifestyle of a global and eclectic woman.”  Her favorite materials for creation include crystals, resin, and semi-precious stones.  A connoisseur of art, she believes in creating jewelry that incorporates the best elements of modern and classic designs.  Amrita Singh has been featured in almost every fashion publication worldwide in addition to being a celebrity favorite.  Icons from Jennifer Lopez and Mary J. Blige to Faith Hill and Queen Mary of Denmark are just a few that have been collecting Singh’s jewelry for many years.

Singh was born and raised in New Delhi, India, but moved to Long Island, New York, for high school.  She later moved to New York City for college and has stayed there ever since.  “Who can leave New York City!  It is my favorite city in the world,” she says.  Her creativity always showed through her interest in all forms of art and love for collecting art and jewelry.  Throughout high school and college, she studied fine art, life drawing and painting, jewelry and fashion design, and sculpting.  Singh graduated from The Fashion Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in International Marketing.  All the while, she took design classes in jewelry and clothing while studying there.  She also completed the prestigious two year executive training program at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City and has worked with world-renowned designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Christian Lacroix.

Amrita SinghAmrita Singh features an amazingly wide selection of affordable and high-quality earrings.   The East Hampton Earrings (ERC 1606) is one of their best-selling styles.  The East Hampton is a chic hanging three teardrop earring with marbled resin stones set in gold-toned plated brass.  We love the Coral Haze color because it works great with dresses in the spring and summer and boots and jackets for fall and winter.  Simple yet elegant, these earrings are a classic in the fashion world and will accessorize even the simplest of outfits.  Amrita Singh is unique from other jewelry designers because their jewelry is made with a point of view.  “We want to dress the global trotter who has a lust for life, travel and art,” Singh shares.  They make statement pieces as well as staple favorites but also spend a great deal of time in developing unique resin/crystal/semi-precious stones (colors and cuts) that are made exclusively for their designs and unavailable in the market.  Each piece can go through several gifted hands (artisans) and continents before it reaches the end consumer.  Singh adds, “All this is done through our design and development offices and manufacturing done specifically for us and by us.”

Amrita SinghFrom among her collection, her favorite are the bangles, especially the Vin, Rupal and Amarya bangle sets.  It is no surprise that Amrita adores her Amarya bangles (KB 357), as this gorgeous mixed set of 18k gold, silver, and gunmetal-plated layered bangles are versatile and stunning.  These lovely bangles embellished with clear Austrian crystals can be worn layered together to show off the contrasting gleam and tone of gold and silver or monochromatic depending on the outfit. One can effortlessly dress up a simple pair of jeans and shirt with these everyday yet spectacular and beautiful bangles.  “We take pride in our bangle sets that are TOP sellers and collectibles Amrita Singhbecause they can be mixed and matched and put together in multiple assortments,” Singh says.  She points out that although it may seem easy, it is quite time consuming and FUN at the same time to make bangle sets.  Singh notes it is hard to find layering bangle sets in the market, which was the case when she began making them six years ago.  The bangle sets are made to accommodate all women as they are made in three specific sizes since she could not find sized bangles in the market.  To safeguard those precious bangles, be sure to snag a Sari Bangle Travel Case (AJA 105) which protects your bangles while traveling.  Made of a cotton and silk Sari pattern, this travel case is well-cushioned and comes with a cushioned insert to hold bangles in place.  Zipper closure keeps them snug.  The Sari pattern fabric is available in ivory, green, and red.

Amrita SinghOne of our Editor’s Picks is the Reversible Resin Bib Necklace (NKC 777) because it makes a bold statement and is versatile with its reversible sides.  This beautifully crafted 18k gold plated necklace is a reversible three strand necklace with resin stones.  Throw this over a simple sheath dress or shirt and see what an amazing difference it makes as the striking color of the resin stones against the warm yellow gold is simply golden.  We selected the jet black and lapis necklace as the jet black goes with everything while the deep blue lapis is so unique and striking.  The reversible resin bib necklace is available in five color combinations which makes it hard to choose just one.  Singh comes up with ideas for designs mostly through travel and books, but also through an interest in anything and everything that she comes across as she is just a naturally curious person.  Her design interests are global, reflecting the city that she inhabits and works in: urban, culturally diverse, and infused with artistic inspiration.  She has a product development team who assists her with graphic designs and sample developments.

Amrita SinghAnother Editor’s Pick is the Nello Necklace (NKC 02).  Available in four colors; coral, honey gold, jet black, and smokey.  Double layered strands of linked oval resin stones in strikingly beautiful colors meet at the dangling centerpiece.  We adored the Coral Haze color as its feminine and fun hue is great for spring and summer outfits and stunning against white outfits.  Just as stunning and lovely is the Honey Gold as it offers a more upscale and mature look with its honey golden hue of yellow, which is great year-round with a business jacket or dress.  Amrita SinghBusiness has been successful as they have been selling globally through their e-commerce site, for the last five years.  Amrita Singh also features creative and fashion-forward handbags, sandals, and hair accessories.  Looking ahead, there are plans to open stores in the next five years.  The flagship store will be in New York City, while other cities of interest include Los Angeles, New Delhi (India), and Shanghai (China).  They are also planning on developing more categories such as home furnishings and clothing.  Amrita Singh is sold in over 200 stores nationwide including specialty department stores like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom and boutiques like Henri Bendel and Intermix.  The Fine Jewelry Collection is available exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City.

Amrita SinghThe collection offers so many unique and exotic rings that it is hard to feature just one.  For a fabulous everyday ring that makes a subtle statement, we selected the Cannes Ring (RC 614) in light coral and blue turquoise.  Named after the beautify city in Southern France, this ring features two natural semi-precious stones with 18k plating over brass to give it that rich and luxurious feel.  This ring is also available in six other semi-precious stone combinations including green turquoise, pink turquoise, lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye, and more.  From personal experience in studying the intricacies of Indian art through travel and extensive independent work, Singh draws upon the designs of India and the Mughal dynasty to create artisanal Indian jewelry and accessories.  Her Bangle Bangle, Bollywood, and other collections have achieved high success as her blend of influences and craft are distinctive and timeless.  India is her first and foremost love, but other countries which top her favorites list include Istanbul, Morocco, Bali and Shanghai.  Singh likes that these countries have deep rooted history and art which she loves to explore.

The collection is constantly updated as they are always adding new styles every few weeks, while also selling their staple favorites (like the Vin Bangle Set) since 2003.  Her favorite jewelry designer is Kenneth Jay Lane.  In her spare time, she enjoys reading, travelling, and dinners with family and friends.  The jewelry brand works with over thirty charities and has raised over $250,000 in the last eight years.  For more information, see the charity section of their website  In closing, Singh says, “Live everyday like it’s your last! Life is too short so make the most of it.”
